The purpose of this enduring material is to make you comfortable in doing an advanced neurological examination. Exams can be performed anywhere - in a cardiology office, in a primary care setting, or in a hospital. The goal of this enduring material is to teach you the proper techniques and flow of a neurological exam. Once you are familiar with the process, you can practice on your own. Practicing will provide you with confidence seeing patients. Once you get this 5-minute neurological examination right, you can do it without having to think about it. This enduring material is carefully and thoughtfully designed to provide a very similar experience to live face-to-face workshop.
At the end of this enduring material, participants should be better able to:
- Discuss various components of an advanced neurological examination.
- Develop a logical flow for routine neurological examinations, from one area of the exam to the other.
- Describe proper techniques for performing an advanced neurological examination.
This enduring material is intended for a broad audience including general physicians, primary care providers, specialty physicians, physicians in training (residents and fellows), and medical students.
Five domains for neurological examination and history taking include:
- Approach to obtaining patient history during an advanced neurological exam.
- Examination flow for an advanced neurological exam.
- Examination techniques for an advanced neurological exam.
- Performing an advanced neurological exam.
- Presentation of a neurological case.
This enduring material is a clinical skills experience and is intended as an online workshop. For best learning, it is required that you practice the examination along with watching the online videos. Find a study partner or a family member to play the role of the patient while performing the neurological examination techniques. Performing the exam multiple times will develop muscle memory.
Assessment will consist of several multiple choice questions related to the lectures and videos within the Advanced Neurological Examination modules.

To obtain continuing education credits (optional)
- Click the registration link provided on the last slide of Module 3.
- Pay the additional $50.00 registration fee.
- Complete the post-test, you will need to correctly answer 2 of the 3 questions.
- Complete the evaluation.
- Print your certificate and retain it for future documentation.
